It all started when the angry chicken blog mentioned the Mason-Dixon Knitters Stopover knitalong, Bang Out A Sweater. I don't know what it was - looking at all of the different color combinations? The idea that I could knit again, something quick and light and easy? My ever intense need of being part of a group? Winter and wanting something that required watching lots of TV? An excuse to avoid other projects?
Maybe. That's certainly what sent me on a trek south to Saugerties and the Perfect Blend yarn shop, a combination yarn and tea shop in a cute building in a cute downtown.
It was only an hour out of my way to another adventure, and they carried the Icelandic yarn that the pattern used. It was worth visiting, right? Just go in, look at the yarn, get it out of my system, and walk out.
Only it was their Super Bowl Saturday sale. I reached into the teapot, pulled out a coupon. The 40% off coupon. The only one of its kind in the teapot.
I felt pretty guilty. I haven't knitted since maybe 1990? Knitting proved to be too expensive (due to my tastes) and too heavy for easy traveling when I started this job so I switched to embroidery. Now I can afford a J Crew cardigan and it fits, so why knit? Why indeed.
The coupon was clearly a sign from heaven. KNIT. I loaded up my basket with the yarn, told the helpful saleswoman to find me all of the necessary needles, and that was that. I was sucked in deep.
If you're wondering why I haven't blogged, or sent prizes, or finished the Washington Park annual report, or sent valentines yet, well, now you know. I've been casting on, and then casting on again, and learning how to knit in the round, and how to use double-pointed needles, and how to increase and decrease (some things I forgot in twenty-odd years), and I've been watching lots of knitting howto videos (not available in 1990) and all of the episodes of Dr. Blake and of Father Brown and of the Librarians. It's so relaxing! I could do it for hours!
This was all very justifiable Valentine's Day weekend, when it was 8 below. You can't do much else but knit, right? But now it's suddenly spring. I'm not wearing a coat! I need to get this done fast so I can get back to the world in which I'm supposed to participate.
Oh, and I made Valentine cookies. (That's a rocket ship, since NO ONE COULD TELL.(Luckily people were nice and guessed lobster or beetle and not anything overly suggestive)
Two sleeves and the body are done. Time to join the sleeves to the body and start the yoke. But I've gained one stitch between counting the stitches and starting the first row of yoke knitting. There's been a lot of frogging and reknitting in this sweater...
